Animal Collisions Happen—Here’s How to Stay Safe

Animal strikes can occur anytime—day or night—and even if you don’t live in a rural area. Whether it’s a deer darting across the highway or a squirrel running through your neighborhood, knowing what to do if you hit an animal with your car is important for your safety and your vehicle’s condition.

How to Avoid Hitting an Animal on the Road

1. Slow down in high-risk areas.
Animal crossing signs are posted for a reason. Always assume an animal will cross the road.

2. Be alert from dusk to dawn.
Most wildlife is active during early morning and late evening hours. Drive slower and scan the road edges carefully.

3. Stay focused.
Avoid distractions and keep your headlights clean and properly aimed. High beams (when safe) can help you see animal eyes reflecting in the dark.

Steps to Take If You Hit an Animal with Your Vehicle

1. Stay calm and check for injuries.
Make sure everyone in your vehicle is okay before anything else.

2. Move to a safe location.
Pull over to the shoulder, turn on hazard lights, and use reflective triangles or flares if you have them.

3. Call the police.
If the animal is large, injured, or blocking the road, notify local authorities. A police report can help support your insurance claim.

4. Do not approach the animal.
Injured wildlife or pets may be scared and could bite or kick. Keep your distance.

5. Document the scene.
Take clear photos of:

  • Your vehicle’s damage

  • The animal (if safe)

  • Any debris on the road

6. Collect witness info.
Names, emails, and phone numbers can help with your claim.

7. Contact your insurance provider ASAP.
Report the animal strike right away to ensure you recall accurate details.

Is Your Vehicle Safe to Drive?

Before leaving the scene, check for:

  • Leaking fluids

  • Smoke or steam

  • Flat tires

  • Broken lights or mirrors

  • Missing or dragging parts

If you need to retrieve parts from the road, use extreme caution and only do so if it’s safe.

If You Hit a Pet

Please make an effort to locate the owner. It’s more compassionate to let them know what happened than to leave them wondering. If you can’t find them, contact local animal control.
